Born in 1966, he initially gained prominence as a member of Chick Corea’s Vigil band in the late 1990s, touring internationally and appearing on Corea’s *A Week at the Blue Note* (1998).
Garland’s compositional style is characterized by intricate harmonies, rhythmic complexity, and a strong melodic sensibility, often drawing inspiration from diverse sources including Indian classical music and Brazilian rhythms. He leads several ensembles, notably the Tim Garland Ensemble and the ‘Almost Trio’ with Gwilym Simcock & Yuri Golubev.
He's released numerous critically acclaimed albums as a leader including *Beneath the Surface* (2005) and *If You Knew* (2018). Beyond performance, Garland is a sought-after arranger, working with orchestras like the BBC Concert Orchestra and composing for film. He holds a PhD in Composition from Brunel University and frequently lectures on improvisation and musical creativity. His work consistently demonstrates a commitment to pushing boundaries within contemporary jazz and beyond.
