The Thing, a Swedish free jazz and improvisation ensemble, will perform at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento, California on July 17, 2026. The group is renowned for its intensely energetic and often chaotic performances, characterized by extended instrumental improvisation, unconventional techniques, and a deliberate rejection of traditional jazz structures. Formed in 1999, The Thing features Mats Gustafsson on tenor saxophone, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums. Their sound incorporates elements of noise rock and punk alongside their core jazz foundation.

The Crest Theatre originally opened in 1939 as a single-screen movie palace designed in the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. Throughout its history, it served primarily as a cinema but experienced periods of decline and closure. A significant restoration completed in 2016 revitalized the venue, returning it to its original grandeur while upgrading its capabilities to host live performances including concerts, theatrical productions and community events. The theatre is noted for its ornate interior featuring detailed plasterwork and a large stage suitable for diverse acts. It currently functions as both a performing arts center and a first-run movie house.
