The Sound Lounge operates as both a music collective and an intimate live music venue. The collective features a rotating roster of musicians specialising in a broadly defined genre of ‘nu-jazz’, incorporating elements of contemporary jazz harmony with influences from electronica, broken beat, and ambient soundscapes. Performances often feature improvisation and explore textural sound design alongside melodic content.

Established in 2011 by bassist and composer Larry Bartley, The Sound Lounge initially began as a series of pop-up events showcasing emerging jazz talent. It quickly gained recognition for its commitment to fostering innovative and experimental music. In 2014, it secured a permanent home within the Sutton Arts Centre, becoming a dedicated listening space known for its high-quality sound system and attentive audience. The venue prioritises acoustic performance and aims to create an immersive experience for both performers and attendees. The collective regularly collaborates with musicians across various disciplines and has released recordings documenting their live sessions.
