Tenebrae, a highly acclaimed British vocal ensemble, will perform at St George’s Bristol on August 9th, 2026. The group is renowned for its interpretations of Renaissance polyphony, as well as commissioning and performing contemporary choral works. St George’s Bristol occupies a former Dutch Reformed church, completed in 1823 by Sir Robert Smirke, who also designed the British Museum. Originally built to serve Bristol’s Dutch community, the building transitioned into a concert hall following significant decline in congregation numbers during the 20th century. It underwent substantial renovation and restoration work completed in 2018, enhancing its acoustics and accessibility while preserving its historical character.
The venue is known for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere, hosting a diverse range of musical genres including classical, jazz, world music and contemporary performances. Its unique architectural features contribute to a distinctive concert experience; the building retains many original features alongside modern additions designed to improve audience comfort and performance capabilities.
