St John’s Smith Square holds a significant place in London’s musical landscape. Originally built in 1728 as a parish church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, it quickly became known for its exceptional acoustics. Throughout the 19th century, it hosted numerous large-scale choral performances. In the mid-20th century, facing declining congregation numbers, the church was repurposed primarily as a concert hall in 1969, though it remains a functioning church. The hall is celebrated for its architectural merit – being a Grade I listed building – and continues to host a diverse range of classical music concerts, recitals and other events.
