Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the world’s oldest and most esteemed orchestras, will perform at Opernhaus Dortmund on October 31, 2026. The orchestra is historically rooted in Saxon courtly tradition, evolving from the Hofkapelle founded in 1548. Its sound is characterized by a rich, warm tone and a historically informed performance practice, particularly renowned for its interpretations of works by composers like Richard Strauss, Carl Maria von Weber, and Richard Wagner – reflecting a strong connection to the German Romantic repertoire. However, their repertoire extends across a broad range of periods and styles.
Opernhaus Dortmund opened in 1964 after its predecessor was destroyed during World War II. Architect Paul Rittinghaus designed the building in a modernist style, emphasizing functional acoustics and audience visibility. The venue is notable for its fan-shaped auditorium which provides good sightlines from most seats and for its substantial size – accommodating over 700 spectators. Throughout its history, Opernhaus Dortmund has hosted a diverse program of opera and ballet performances alongside orchestral concerts, serving as a significant cultural hub for the Ruhr region.
