The band, formed in Austin, Texas in 1997, is generally categorized as indie rock, though their sound incorporates elements of post-punk, art rock, and Britpop. Characterized by tight arrangements, minimalist instrumentation, and Britt Daniel’s distinctive vocals and songwriting, Spoon has cultivated a reputation for consistently evolving while maintaining a recognizable core aesthetic. They have released nine studio albums to date, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated following.
The National is a historic performing arts center located in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond. Originally constructed in 1923 as a movie palace—initially named the Loew’s Metropolitan—it operated as a cinema for several decades. Following a period of disuse and deterioration in the late 20th century, the building underwent extensive restoration completed in 2008.
Today, The National functions as a multi-purpose venue hosting concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings and other events.
