Sjoerd van Eijck, a Dutch composer and performer, will present a concert at the Waalse Kerk in Breda on December 19, 2026. Van Eijck’s musical style is characterized by minimalist compositions for solo piano, often incorporating prepared piano techniques – altering the instrument’s sound by placing objects on or between the strings. His work frequently explores subtle harmonic shifts and textural nuances, creating atmospheric and meditative soundscapes. The Waalse Kerk (Walloon Church) in Breda is a historical building with origins dating back to the 16th century. Originally constructed as a beguinage chapel dedicated to Saint Agnes in 1550, it became a place of worship for French-speaking Protestants – the Walloons – fleeing religious persecution in France and the Netherlands during the Eighty Years' War. The current Gothic Revival structure largely dates from 1888, following a significant reconstruction.
