Fitzgerald’s Nightclub has a long history as a prominent live music venue in the Chicago metropolitan area. Originally opened as a supper club in 1940 by Al Capone’s former bodyguard, John “Fitz” Fitzgerald, it quickly became known for hosting nationally recognized jazz and blues artists. While undergoing changes in ownership and format over the years – including periods as a rock & roll venue and a more general entertainment space – it consistently maintained its dedication to live performance. In 1980, it was purchased by local businessman Bill Kurtis who restored it to its original glory focusing on jazz, blues and American roots music. It continues to operate as a significant cultural hub attracting both established performers and emerging artists.
