Righteous Rooster is a Chicago-based ensemble performing a blend of traditional New Orleans jazz, early jazz, and hot jazz styles. Their performances frequently incorporate improvisation and a lively, energetic stage presence, drawing influence from musicians like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. The group typically features instrumentation including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, banjo, tuba or string bass, and drums.
The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge in Chicago has a significant history deeply intertwined with the city’s jazz scene and its Prohibition-era past. Originally opened as a speakeasy in 1927 by Al Capone’s alleged associate “Handsome Dan” Segel, the venue maintained connections to organized crime for some time. Post-Prohibition, it transitioned into a legitimate jazz club and quickly became a favored performance space for prominent artists.
Throughout its history, the Green Mill has been known for its intimate atmosphere, dimly lit interior, and Art Deco design elements. It continues to operate as both a cocktail lounge and live music venue showcasing predominantly jazz performers. The space retains much of its original character and is considered a landmark within Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood and an important site in American jazz history.
