Polyphony is a highly regarded British vocal ensemble specializing in a cappella performance of Renaissance polyphony, though their repertoire extends to include music from the medieval period through to contemporary compositions. The group is known for its precise intonation, expressive phrasing, and commitment to historically informed performance practice. Founded in 1988 by Julian Rush, Polyphony frequently performs works by composers such as Palestrina, Josquin des Prez, and William Byrd, alongside lesser-known figures.
St John’s Smith Square is a former church, consecrated in 1724 as a parish church. Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, it is considered one of his finest architectural achievements and a prime example of English Baroque style. Following significant structural issues in the late 20th century, a major restoration project was undertaken and completed in 1986. Since then, it has functioned primarily as a concert hall and event space while retaining its ecclesiastical character. The hall is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, making it a favoured venue for choral and chamber music performances. Its intimate size fosters a close connection between performers and audience. The building also hosts recitals, lectures and other cultural events.
