Experience Polyphony live on December 22nd
Polyphony, a British vocal ensemble renowned for its performances of Renaissance polyphony and contemporary choral works, is scheduled to perform at St John’s Smith Square in London on December 22nd, 2026. The group, founded in 1988 by Julian Rush, typically performs unaccompanied music spanning six centuries, with a particular focus on the English choral tradition and newly commissioned pieces. Their repertoire often features complex harmonies and intricate vocal textures.
St John’s Smith Square holds significant historical and architectural importance. Originally built in 1724 as a parish church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, a prominent architect of the English Baroque period, it ceased being a functioning parish church in 1994. It was subsequently re-established as a concert hall dedicated to musical performance. The hall is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and intimate setting, making it a favoured venue for chamber orchestras, vocal ensembles, and solo recitals. Its interior retains many of its original architectural features including ornate plasterwork and stained glass windows. The building is listed as Grade I, recognising its national importance. It continues to host over 300 concerts annually across diverse genres including classical, jazz and world music.
