Experience Pēteris Vasks live on August 25th
On August 25, 2026, a concert featuring the works of Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks will take place at the Plechelmuskerk in Oldenzaal, Netherlands. Vasks’s musical style is often described as deeply expressive and rooted in Latvian folk traditions, yet incorporating elements of modernism. His compositions frequently explore themes of nature, spirituality, and human suffering, characterized by intense emotionality, rich harmonic language, and often incorporating extended techniques for instrumental performance. He is known for his string quartets, vocal works, and orchestral pieces.
The Plechelmuskerk (St. Plechelm Church) is a Gothic hall church located in Oldenzaal. Construction began around 1450 on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Plechelm, the first bishop of Oldenzaal. The church is notable for its impressive height and relatively narrow nave – a typical feature of East Dutch Gothic architecture – and its substantial sandstone construction. It underwent significant restoration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led by architect Johannes Cuijpers who also worked on St. Catherine's Cathedral in Utrecht.
