Pablo Heras-Casado is a Spanish conductor internationally recognized for his interpretations of both standard repertoire and lesser-known works, often emphasizing clarity, rhythmic precision, and a sensitivity to orchestral color. He frequently champions contemporary composers alongside the established masters, and is known for performances that highlight dramatic narrative within the music.
The Teatro Real, Madrid, opened in 1850 after a complex history of delays and redesigns. Initially conceived under Queen Isabella II, its construction spanned decades and faced financial difficulties. It quickly became a significant center for Spanish opera and zarzuela – a uniquely Spanish lyric-dramatic genre – though it experienced periods of closure and repurposing throughout the 20th century, even serving as a concert hall during the Spanish Civil War.
A major restoration completed in 1997 returned the Teatro Real to its original function as an opera house, establishing it as one of Europe’s leading venues. The theatre is renowned for its acoustics and architectural grandeur, featuring a horseshoe-shaped auditorium seating approximately 2,124 people.
