Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) is renowned for its dynamic and expressive performances of both classical and contemporary repertoire. Established in 1934, the orchestra has developed a strong international reputation, frequently touring and recording, and is known for championing Canadian composers alongside established masters. Its musical style blends traditional orchestral technique with a distinctly North American sensibility, often characterized by rich textures and emotional depth.
La Maison Symphonique de Montréal, the primary performance venue for the OSM, opened in 2011 following extensive renovations to the original Place des Arts concert hall built in 1963. Designed by architectural firm Affleck de la Riva, the hall was conceived with acoustics as a paramount concern. The design incorporates a "shoe-box" shape considered ideal for orchestral sound, utilizing maple flooring and adjustable acoustic panels to optimize resonance and clarity.
The hall’s construction addressed significant acoustic deficiencies present in the previous iteration, aiming to create an immersive experience for both performers and audience members. It is also notable for its integration of visual art and sustainable building practices. La Maison Symphonique de Montréal regularly hosts a variety of performances beyond orchestral concerts, including opera, ballet, and popular music events.
