The orchestra boasts a long and distinguished history, tracing its origins back to 1585, and is renowned for its interpretations of both standard repertoire and contemporary works. The Opernhaus Dortmund opened in 1964 after its predecessor was destroyed during World War II. Designed by architect Wilhelm Schneekloth, it is notable for its modernist architectural style and its emphasis on audience proximity to the stage – a deliberate departure from more traditional opera house layouts. The building features a main auditorium seating approximately 766 patrons and is equipped with advanced stage technology. It serves as the home venue for Oper Dortmund and also hosts visiting orchestras and ballet companies. The Opernhaus Dortmund underwent extensive renovation between 2008-2010 to modernize facilities while preserving its original architectural integrity.
