Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin will perform at Exil in Zurich, Switzerland on August 10, 2026. Ronin’s music is characterized by a unique blend of jazz improvisation, minimalist composition, and elements of Japanese aesthetics, often described as “ritual music.” Bärtsch developed the concept of “functional harmony,” prioritizing sonic spaces and rhythmic patterns over traditional harmonic progressions. The ensemble typically features piano, percussion, bass clarinet, and drums, creating a sound that is both meditative and dynamic. Ronin has released several albums on ECM Records since its formation in 2001, gaining international recognition for its distinctive approach.

Exil is a long-standing venue in Zurich dedicated to improvised and experimental music. Founded in 1981 by Hansruedi Käser, it initially operated as a cooperative before becoming a non-profit association in 1994. The space has consistently provided a platform for both established and emerging artists working across various genres within the realm of creative music – including free improvisation, contemporary jazz, and electronic music.
