Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin will perform at Exil in Zurich, Switzerland on July 20, 2026. Ronin’s music is characterized by a unique blend of jazz improvisation, minimalist composition, and elements of Japanese aesthetics. Often described as “ritual music,” it emphasizes repetitive structures, subtle dynamic shifts, and a focus on sonic texture achieved through piano, percussion, bass clarinet, and drums. Bärtsch developed the concept of “functional harmony” which underpins the ensemble's compositional approach, moving away from traditional chord progressions towards a more melodic and rhythmic focus. The group has released several acclaimed albums on ECM Records since its formation in 2004.

Exil is a renowned venue for experimental and improvised music located in Zurich’s industrial district 5.
