Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin is scheduled to perform at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany on October 22, 2026. Ronin’s music is characterized by a unique blend of jazz improvisation, minimalist composition, and elements of ritual music, often described as “functional music.” Bärtsch developed this approach aiming for a sound that is both highly structured and open to spontaneous interaction amongst the musicians. The ensemble typically features piano, drums, bass clarinet, and percussion, creating complex rhythmic patterns and atmospheric soundscapes.

The Elbphilharmonie itself opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction and significant cost overruns. Built atop an existing warehouse (the Kaispeicher A) in the HafenCity district, it has quickly become a landmark building and a major cultural venue in Hamburg. Its distinctive glass structure sits on a curved base constructed from brick.

The concert hall within – the Grand Hall – is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, designed by Yasuhisa Toyota utilizing a "vineyard" style seating arrangement surrounding the stage. The Elbphilharmonie hosts a diverse program of classical music concerts, as well as performances spanning various genres including jazz and contemporary music.
