Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin will perform at Bunker Ulmenwall in Bielefeld, Germany on October 15, 2026. Ronin’s music is characterized by a unique blend of jazz improvisation, minimalist composition, and elements of Japanese aesthetics, often described as “ritual beat music.” Bärtsch’s compositions emphasize rhythmic precision and subtly shifting harmonic textures, creating a soundscape that is both meditative and dynamic. The ensemble typically features piano, drums, bass clarinet, and percussion.
Bunker Ulmenwall is a former Cold War-era civil defense bunker constructed in the late 1960s. Originally designed to shelter the population of Bielefeld during potential aerial attacks, it was decommissioned after the end of the Cold War. In recent years, it has been repurposed as a cultural venue focusing on experimental music and art. The venue retains much of its original architectural character – concrete walls and a subterranean location – contributing to its distinctive atmosphere. It’s known for its excellent acoustics and intimate setting, frequently hosting performances by artists working in electronic music, noise music, and avant-garde jazz. The space aims to provide a platform for challenging and innovative artistic expression.
