Nduduzo Makhathini is a South African pianist, composer, and spiritual leader whose music blends jazz improvisation with traditional Zulu musical elements and deeply rooted spiritual practices. His compositions often incorporate vocals in his native isiZulu language, exploring themes of ancestry, healing, and the complexities of the Black experience. Makhathini’s work frequently features layered textures, polyrhythms, and a distinctive harmonic palette informed by both South African traditions and the broader jazz lineage. He has released several critically acclaimed albums on Blue Note Records, solidifying his position as a significant voice in contemporary jazz.
Keystone Korner Baltimore is a relatively new venue established in 2018, intended as a tribute to the legendary Keystone Korner jazz club originally founded in San Francisco in 1972 by Todd Barkan. The original Keystone Korner was renowned for hosting performances by many prominent jazz musicians including Miles Davis, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, and Pharoah Sanders during its initial run (1972-1985) and subsequent revivals. The Baltimore iteration aims to recreate that intimate atmosphere and commitment to showcasing innovative jazz artists.
