Nduduzo Makhathini, a South African pianist, composer, and spiritual leader, will perform at Atwood Music Hall in Madison, Wisconsin on May 15, 2027. Makhathini’s music blends jazz improvisation with traditional Zulu musical elements and spiritual themes rooted in his ancestral heritage. His compositions often incorporate polyrhythms, modal harmonies, and vocalizations, creating a deeply immersive and meditative soundscape. He frequently explores themes of ancestry, spirituality, and the Black experience. He has released several critically acclaimed albums on Blue Note Records, including “Modes of Communication: Letters to the Dead” and “In the Shadow of Lions.”

Atwood Music Hall is a historic venue located in the Atwood neighborhood of Madison. Originally built in 1906 as a Masonic Temple, it underwent renovations and transitioned into a dedicated performance space focused on diverse musical genres. The hall is known for its intimate setting and excellent acoustics. It has hosted a wide range of artists over the years encompassing jazz, folk, world music and contemporary styles. The building retains many original architectural details from its early 20th-century construction contributing to its unique character.
