The Mingus Big Band will perform at The Pocket in New York City on August 3, 2026. This ensemble is dedicated to performing and preserving the complex and dynamic compositions of legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus. Their music blends elements of hard bop, post-bop, gospel, blues, and third stream, often characterized by intricate arrangements, improvisational freedom, and a powerful emotional range. Founded in 1991 by Sue Mingus, Charles Mingus’ widow, the band aims to present his work with both fidelity and vitality.

The Pocket is a relatively new jazz club located in Greenwich Village, New York City. Opened in 2023, it quickly established itself as a listening room prioritizing acoustic sound and an intimate atmosphere. The venue is intentionally small – seating approximately 60 people – fostering a close connection between performers and audience members. It has been praised for its high-quality sound system designed specifically for unamplified jazz performance and its dedication to showcasing both established artists and emerging talent within the jazz scene. The space previously housed another music venue, Arthur's Tavern, known for its long history of traditional jazz performances.
