The Mingus Big Band will perform at The Pocket in New York City on June 29, 2026. The Mingus Big Band is renowned for its interpretations and expansions of the compositions of Charles Mingus, a highly influential bassist, composer, and bandleader in jazz history. Their music builds upon Mingus’s complex arrangements—often characterized by dynamic shifts, improvisation, and a blend of hard bop, gospel, blues, and classical influences—while incorporating contemporary arrangements and soloists. The band consistently presents both well-known Mingus pieces and previously unrecorded works discovered in his extensive archives.

The Pocket is a relatively new jazz club located in Greenwich Village, New York City. Opened in 2023, it occupies the space formerly held by Arthur’s Tavern, a historic venue with a decades-long legacy as a hub for traditional jazz. The Pocket aims to continue that tradition while also embracing a broader spectrum of jazz styles. It's designed as an intimate listening room prioritizing acoustics and artist visibility with seating for approximately 75 patrons. The venue emphasizes live performance and provides a platform for both established artists and emerging talent within the jazz community.
