The Gropius-Bau, originally constructed as a decorative arts museum in 1914, holds a significant place in Berlin’s cultural history. Designed by Martin Gropius, the building’s architecture reflects the stylistic transition between German Romanticism and early Modernism. Throughout its history, it has served various purposes; notably being used for exhibitions by the Nazi regime during World War II and later becoming a prominent venue for art and cultural exhibitions during the Cold War era when it was located near the Berlin Wall.

Today, the Berlinische Galerie operates within the Gropius-Bau complex, focusing on art created in Berlin from 1870 to the present day.
