Michael Law’s Piccadilly Dance Orchestra will perform at The Phoenix in London on October 17, 2026. The orchestra specialises in recreating the vibrant British dance band sound of the 1920s and 30s, drawing heavily from the arrangements of composers like Billy Ternan, Carroll Gibbons, and Roy Fox. Their repertoire includes popular tunes from the era alongside lesser-known gems, aiming for an authentic representation of the sophisticated dance music that characterised hotel ballrooms and radio broadcasts of the interwar period. Instrumentation typically features a core rhythm section alongside brass, woodwind and occasionally vocal performances in a style reminiscent of the time.
The Phoenix, located in Cavendish Square, London, originally opened as a cinema in 1930 designed by F. K. Matcham. Throughout its history it operated under various names – including the Curzon Cinema and the Phoenix Theatre – hosting film screenings and live performances. Following periods of closure and redevelopment, it reopened as an arts centre in 1988 with a focus on independent film, theatre, and live music. The building retains many original Art Deco features contributing to its distinctive character.
