Melbourne Chamber Orchestra is recognised for its dynamic and innovative approach to classical music performance, frequently focusing on arrangements and original compositions that explore a wide range of musical periods – from Baroque to contemporary – often with a spotlight on Australian composers. The ensemble is known for its flexible instrumentation, allowing it to tailor performances to suit specific repertoire and venues.

The concert on July 9th, 2026, will be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre, a premier performance venue dedicated to music. Opened in 2009, the Centre was designed by architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall and boasts three primary performance spaces: the intimate Salon, the versatile Primrose Potter Salon, and the main auditorium, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall – where this concert is scheduled.

The Recital Centre was conceived as a response to a perceived lack of dedicated recital spaces in Melbourne, aiming to provide an acoustically excellent environment specifically tailored for chamber music, vocal recitals, and smaller orchestral ensembles. Its design incorporates principles of variable acoustics allowing for adaptation to different performance needs. The Centre hosts a diverse program including classical, jazz, contemporary and world music performances throughout the year.
