The Towers and Walls of Aigues-Mortes are a remarkably well-preserved example of medieval military architecture. Construction began in 1283 under King Philip III of France, initially intended to protect the salt marshes – a vital source of revenue for the kingdom – and provide a port for Mediterranean trade. The fortress consists of a walled city encircled by towers and ramparts extending over 1.6 kilometers. Originally surrounded by lagoons offering natural defense, the landscape has changed over centuries due to silting; however, the structure remains largely intact. It served as a royal fortress until the 17th century and later functioned as a prison before being designated a historical monument in 1840.
