The Mahler Chamber Orchestra will perform at the Opernhaus Dortmund on June 13, 2027. This orchestra, founded in 1997 by Claudio Abbado and Bernard Haitink, is renowned for its flexible instrumentation and historically informed performance practice. While capable of performing a broad repertoire, the ensemble frequently focuses on works from the Classical and early Romantic periods, alongside 20th and 21st-century compositions – often with a particular emphasis on Mahler’s own works, despite the name. The orchestra is noted for its collaborative approach and lack of a fixed principal conductor, fostering diverse interpretations.

The Opernhaus Dortmund opened in 1964 after its predecessor was destroyed during World War II. Designed by architect Paul Röhricht, it represents a significant example of post-war German architectural reconstruction and functionalist theatre design. The building features a main auditorium seating approximately 768 spectators and is known for its excellent acoustics. Throughout its history, the Opernhaus Dortmund has hosted a wide range of operatic and ballet performances, as well as orchestral concerts, serving as a central cultural institution for the city and surrounding region.
