Experience Lothar Koenigs live on February 19th
Lothar Koenigs (1927-1979) was a German composer associated with the post-war avant-garde, particularly integral serialism and electronic music. His compositions often explore complex textures and structures, frequently incorporating aleatoric elements – allowing for chance occurrences within a defined framework. While initially influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Koenigs developed a distinct voice characterized by a refined sensitivity to timbre and spatial effects. He was a pioneer in utilizing computer technology in musical composition during his time at the Institute for Sonic Research in Utrecht.
The Alte Oper Frankfurt (Old Opera House) holds significant cultural importance. Originally opened in 1880, it was heavily damaged during World War II and remained a ruin for decades, becoming a symbol of Frankfurt’s destruction. Reconstruction began in the late 1970s, guided by historical preservation principles but incorporating modern architectural elements. It reopened in 1981 not as an opera house presenting full operatic productions, but as a multi-purpose performance space hosting concerts, ballet, chamber music, and other events.
