Originally built as a parish church in the early 18th century – consecrated in 1728 – it underwent substantial restoration in the 1950s transforming it into a renowned concert hall. The hall is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, stemming from its Baroque architecture and careful acoustic design during the restoration period. It became particularly known as a venue fostering young musical talent; the Young Concert Artists Trust was founded there in 1970 and remains closely associated with the hall. Throughout its history, St John’s Smith Square has hosted performances by many internationally acclaimed musicians and orchestras, becoming a key location for chamber music and vocal recitals alongside larger orchestral events.
