Douglass Park is a 64-acre public park located in the North Lawndale community on Chicago’s West Side. Established in 1895, it was one of the earliest parks developed by the South Parks Commissioners as part of the city’s expansive park system. Designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., the park features a lagoon, walking paths, athletic fields and a fieldhouse constructed in 1914. Historically, Douglass Park served as a significant recreational space for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods and continues to host community events and gatherings. It is named after Frederick Douglass, the prominent abolitionist and orator.
