La Nuova Musica is a London-based ensemble specialising in historically informed performance of 17th and 18th-century music, with a particular focus on Italian repertoire. The group is known for its vibrant and expressive interpretations, employing period instruments and research into performance practices of the Baroque era. Their performances often feature lesser-known composers alongside more familiar figures, aiming to illuminate the richness and diversity of the period.
St John’s Smith Square is a former church, consecrated in 1728, and now operates primarily as a concert hall. Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, it is considered a significant example of English Baroque architecture. Originally built as one of twelve new churches commissioned following the Fifty New Churches Act of 1716, intended to serve the growing population of London, it fell into disrepair during the 20th century. A major restoration project in the 1950s saved the building from demolition and repurposed it as a venue for musical performances.
The hall’s acoustics are highly regarded, making it popular for recordings and performances of classical music, particularly choral works and chamber music.
