Originally established in 1967 as a members-only social club for theatrical stage technicians – hence “MOTH” (Members of the Hackney Trade Society) – it operated independently for decades. In 2015, facing potential closure due to rising rents, a community campaign successfully secured its future as a music venue and cultural space.

The club retains much of its original interior décor from the 1960s including distinctive patterned carpets and ornate lighting, contributing to its unique atmosphere.
