Opened in 1921 by Josiah Hickinbottom, a local ironmaster, it was established as a pleasure park for the working classes – originally named ‘The People’s Park’. It is notable for being one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the world and features a range of traditional rides including a historic wooden rollercoaster, built in 1926. The park retains many original features from its early years and operates as a charitable trust dedicated to providing affordable family entertainment.
