Joana Mallwitz is a German conductor recognized for her insightful interpretations and compelling stage presence. Her musical approach often emphasizes clarity of texture, dramatic intensity, and a deep engagement with the emotional core of the score. While versatile across repertoire, she is particularly noted for her performances of Romantic and early 20th-century works, as well as opera. She frequently collaborates with leading orchestras internationally and is currently General Music Director of the Staatsoper Hamburg.
The Alte Oper Frankfurt (Old Opera House) holds a significant place in German cultural history. Originally opened in 1880, it was heavily damaged during World War II and remained derelict for decades. A lengthy public debate ensued regarding its reconstruction versus demolition; ultimately, a meticulous restoration – not a complete rebuild – was undertaken between 1967 and 1968.
The restored Alte Oper reopened as a multi-purpose performance space, retaining much of its original neo-Renaissance and Baroque Revival architectural features internally while featuring a modern exterior. It now hosts opera, ballet, concerts (including orchestral and chamber music), and other events.
