Experience Itamar Carmel live on July 13th
Itamar Carmel, an Israeli composer and performer, will present a concert at the Synagogue in Kőszeg, Hungary on July 13, 2026. Carmel’s musical style blends elements of contemporary classical music with influences from Jewish liturgical traditions and Middle Eastern musical modes. His compositions often feature extended techniques for string instruments, particularly the cello – his primary instrument – and explore themes of memory, identity, and spiritual seeking. He frequently incorporates improvisation within structured frameworks.
The Synagogue of Kőszeg, serving the Neolog Jewish community, was consecrated in 1893. Designed by Lipót Baumhorn, a prominent architect known for designing numerous synagogues in Hungary, it exemplifies the eclectic style popular during the late 19th century, combining Moorish Revival and Art Nouveau elements. The building features richly decorated interiors including ornate stucco work and stained glass windows. Following periods of decline and damage during World War II and subsequent neglect under communist rule, significant restoration efforts have been undertaken since the late 20th century to preserve this important architectural and historical landmark. It now functions as a cultural center hosting concerts and exhibitions alongside its role as a place of remembrance.
