Kulturhuset Stadsteatern – literally “The City Theatre Cultural House” – is a significant cultural center in Stockholm, inaugurated in 1974. The building itself is notable for its Brutalist architecture, designed by architect Peter Celsing. It houses several theatre stages – including the main Stockholm City Theatre – a cinema, galleries for exhibitions, restaurants, and event spaces. Originally conceived as a multi-functional space to replace the older Royal Dramatic Theatre’s facilities (which remain in use), it aimed to democratize access to culture by integrating various art forms under one roof. The building underwent extensive renovations between 2018-2020 to modernize its facilities while preserving its architectural heritage.
