Experience Heart of the City Band live on October 18th

Heart of the City Band will perform a concert on October 18, 2026, at Oyate Kinipi in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The band is known for its blend of funk, soul, and R&B influences, often incorporating elements of jazz improvisation and contemporary grooves. Their performances typically feature original compositions alongside reimagined covers, emphasizing strong vocal harmonies and dynamic instrumental arrangements.

Oyate Kinipi, meaning “the people’s cave” in Dakota, is a significant cultural and spiritual site located within the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary along the Mississippi River. Historically used by Dakota people for ceremonies and gatherings – including Inipi (sweat lodge) rituals – it holds deep importance to the Indigenous community. The site was subject to extensive restoration efforts following years of industrial contamination from nearby railroad operations and a former petroleum tank farm.

Today, Oyate Kinipi serves as a place for cultural preservation, education, and reflection. It’s managed through a collaborative partnership between the National Park Service, the City of Saint Paul Parks & Recreation Department, and the Dakota community. The space is designed to honor Dakota traditions while providing public access to a natural environment with interpretive displays detailing its history and significance.
