Harry Christophers will be performing at Hexham Abbey on October 16, 2026. Christophers is a highly regarded British conductor known for his interpretations of Baroque and early Classical music, frequently focusing on choral works. His style emphasizes clarity of vocal lines, historically informed performance practice, and dramatic expression, often achieved through meticulous research and attention to detail. He founded The Sixteen in 1973, a renowned a cappella vocal ensemble, and has also directed groups such as the Bach Choir and the Handel & Haydn Orchestra.
Hexham Abbey is a Benedictine abbey located in the market town of Hexham, Northumberland. Founded in 674 AD by Saint Wilfrid, it holds significant historical importance as one of England’s oldest and most important religious sites. The current building largely dates from the late 12th century onwards, constructed after a fire destroyed an earlier structure. It showcases Norman and Gothic architectural styles with notable features including its impressive stone carvings, stained glass windows and the Frith Stool – a remarkably preserved 7th-century Anglo-Saxon chair believed to have been used by bishops during their installation.
