GoGo Penguin is a British instrumental trio known for their distinctive acoustic sound, often described as a blend of jazz, post-rock, and minimalist classical music. The group, formed in Manchester in 2012, features Chris Illingworth on piano, Nick Blacka on bass, and Rob Turner on drums. Their compositions are characterized by intricate arrangements, driving rhythms, and a focus on texture and dynamics rather than traditional improvisation. They gained prominence through early EPs and have released several acclaimed albums including "To Cut a Long Story Short" and "Everything is Go."
Koko, located in Camden Town, London, has a rich history dating back to its original construction in 1901 as a theatre. Originally named the Music Hall, it underwent several transformations including periods as a BBC radio studio and a nightclub before being extensively renovated following a fire in 2020. The venue is noted for its ornate Victorian architecture and its iconic dome ceiling. Koko retains many of its original features while incorporating modern sound and lighting technology. It’s capacity is approximately 1800 standing or 1400 seated. The building's structure is Grade II listed status recognizing its architectural significance.
