The Hungarian State Opera’s Auditorium, originally known as the Hungarian Royal Opera House, opened in 1884. Designed by Miklós Ybl, it is a significant example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. The building underwent extensive renovations between 2013 and 2022, restoring many of its original features while updating technical capabilities. The auditorium itself is renowned for its excellent acoustics and opulent interior decoration – including frescoes by Mór Than – and can seat approximately 1,262 people. Throughout its history, the venue has hosted performances of both Hungarian and international operatic repertoire alongside ballet and concert programs, establishing itself as Hungary’s premier performing arts institution. It holds national monument status.
