The band is known for its distinctive blend of blues, hip-hop, and jazz, often described as “hippie blues.” Formed in Philadelphia in the early 1990s, G. Love (Garrett Dutton) and Special Sauce gained prominence for their laid-back grooves, lyrical storytelling, and incorporation of harmonica-driven melodies. Their sound frequently features elements of jam band improvisation alongside traditional blues structures.

The Santa Barbara Bowl, an outdoor amphitheater, has been a significant venue for musical performances since its construction in 1933 as a Works Progress Administration project initially intended for polo matches and community events. Over time it transitioned into a popular concert location, hosting a diverse range of artists across genres. Situated in a natural bowl-shaped depression in the foothills above Santa Barbara, it's known for its intimate atmosphere despite holding over 4,500 attendees. The venue underwent substantial renovations in recent years to improve acoustics and accessibility while retaining its historic charm. It continues to be a staple of the Southern California music scene.
