Fruit Bats will be performing at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City, Iowa on October 21, 2026. Fruit Bats, the project spearheaded by Eric Johnson, creates music generally categorized as indie folk and indie rock. Their sound is characterized by layered instrumentation, often incorporating elements of Americana, and Johnson’s distinctive vocal style. Formed in Chicago in 2003, the band has released several albums to critical acclaim, evolving from a primarily solo endeavor to a full band configuration.

The Englert Theatre holds a significant place in Iowa City’s cultural landscape. Originally opened in 1910 as a vaudeville house named the Englert Opera House, it underwent extensive renovations following a devastating fire in 1991. Reopened in 1993, the theatre now functions as a non-profit performing arts venue hosting a diverse range of events including concerts, theatrical productions, dance performances and film screenings. The building itself is noted for its restored architectural details reflecting its early 20th-century origins and its intimate seating capacity of approximately 1,187. It serves as a key venue for both local and nationally touring artists.
