Ensemble Matheus, founded by Jean-Christophe Spinosi, is recognized for its historically informed performances of Baroque and Classical period music, often focusing on French repertoire. This collegiate church boasts a history stretching back to the 11th century, though the current structure largely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, it was rebuilt following damage during the Wars of Religion. The church served as a parish church for centuries and underwent significant restoration in the 20th century. Its architecture reflects Provençal Romanesque traditions blended with Baroque elements, particularly visible in its interior decoration and facade. The acoustic properties of Collégiale Saint-Pierre are noted for their suitability to vocal and chamber music performances due to its stone construction and relatively intimate size.
