Emmet Cohen is a pianist and composer recognized for his deeply rooted approach to jazz tradition, combined with a contemporary sensibility. His playing often draws from the lineage of masters like Nat Adderley and Phineas Newborn, characterized by swinging rhythms, harmonic sophistication, and lyrical improvisation. Cohen frequently leads ensembles focused on the classic jazz trio format – piano, bass, and drums – but also explores larger configurations. He is known for his ongoing “Masters’ Legacy” series which celebrates prominent figures in jazz history.

Smoke Jazz Club, located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, has been a significant venue for jazz performance since its founding in 1999 by Paul Stache and Loren Schoenberg. The club is intentionally intimate, fostering a close connection between performers and audience members. Smoke quickly gained a reputation for presenting both established jazz artists and emerging talent, prioritizing acoustic jazz and straight-ahead playing styles. It’s consistently ranked among New York City’s premier jazz clubs and has hosted numerous renowned musicians throughout its history. Following a temporary closure and relocation due to a fire in 2020, Smoke reopened at a new location on Broadway in 2023 maintaining its commitment to live jazz music.
