The Plaza, Stockport opened in 1932 as a super cinema and variety theatre. Designed in the Art Deco style by William R. Weedon, it was quickly recognised as one of the finest examples of such architecture in the country. Initially operated by Associated British Cinemas (ABC), it hosted film screenings alongside live performances from prominent entertainers of the time. Following periods of decline and closure in the late 20th century, a significant restoration project was completed in 2021, returning the building to its former glory as a multi-purpose arts venue. It now hosts a diverse programme including concerts, theatre productions, and community events while retaining many of its original architectural features. The Plaza is a Grade II listed building, acknowledging its historical and architectural significance.
