Experience Dr Jazz & the Cheshire Cats

Dr. Jazz & the Cheshire Cats were a pioneering American jump blues and rock and roll band formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1980, led by guitarist and vocalist John “Dr. Jazz” Clifton. Initially a solo project showcasing Clifton’s love for 1940s and 50s rhythm & blues, it quickly evolved into a full ensemble. The band became a mainstay of the retro/roots music scene, known for their energetic live performances and authentic vintage sound.

Their style blended classic jump blues, early rockabilly, swing, and boogie-woogie, heavily influenced by artists like Louis Jordan and T-Bone Walker. Dr. Jazz & the Cheshire Cats released several albums throughout the 80s and 90s on labels like Blue Moon Records, including "Jumpin' at the Chevron" (1984) which gained significant airplay on college radio and helped define West Coast swing revival.

The band consistently toured extensively, opening for acts like Robert Cray and Big Joe Turner (early in their career).
