Maymont is a 100-acre Victorian estate gifted to the city of Richmond in 1925 by James H. Dooley and his wife Sallie May Dooley. Originally their private residence, it now functions as a museum and public park. The estate encompasses a historic mansion – Maymont House – designed in a complex Romanesque style, beautifully landscaped gardens including an Italian Garden and a Japanese Garden, a nature center focused on Virginia’s wildlife, and a working farm demonstrating agricultural practices from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The park frequently hosts outdoor events utilizing its expansive lawns and scenic backdrop. Its historical significance stems from representing Gilded Age wealth alongside a commitment to public benefit through its donation to the city.
