Experience Djangophonique live on July 2nd
Djangophonique will be performing at The Whitney in Detroit, Michigan on July 2nd, 2026. The ensemble specializes in “gypsy jazz,” a style originating from the work of guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s. Their music blends traditional jazz instrumentation with influences from Romani musical traditions, often featuring fast-paced, virtuosic guitar work, driving rhythms, and improvisational elements. Expect compositions rooted in swing but incorporating melodies and harmonic structures distinct from mainstream jazz.
The Whitney is a historic mansion located in the Brush Park neighborhood of Detroit. Originally constructed in 1894 for David Whitney Jr., a lumber baron, it exemplifies Gilded Age architecture and opulent design. The house remained a private residence until 1957 when it was sold and subsequently operated as a dinner club and entertainment venue.
Throughout its history, The Whitney has been known for its elaborate interior detailing – including a grand ballroom and intricate woodwork – and its association with Detroit’s social elite. It underwent significant restoration efforts in recent years to preserve its architectural integrity while adapting to its role as an event space. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
